Simon Spier is a normal adolescent living a regular life. It is something that he takes pains to remind the viewer of in his voice-over narration for Enjoy, Simon. Much like the stars of numerous coming-of-age rom-coms before himhe has a gorgeous household, a close-knit set of buddies who carpool for his suburban high school together in the minivan he possesses, along with a burgeoning interest in a career as a video editor. Yes, Simon is exactly like any other child in a teenage movie, except for one major thing: He is gay.
It is enough to make Enjoy, Simon a pioneering movie. Here's a major-studio launch -pitched in a broader adolescent viewers as opposed to an arthouse one-about a boy struggling to come out of the closet for his family and friends, and also attempting to locate love. In trying to appeal to the largest possible audience, the manager Greg Berlanti's movie occasionally feels frustratingly secure, given that it is based on a dull, upper-middle-class hero whose edges are sanded off. That said, there is still something undeniably strong about Enjoy, Simon's ordinariness. Much of Enjoy, Simon's overarching plot is devoted to unraveling this puzzle, as Simon pours out his heart online to somebody whose real name that he does not even understand.
That is the best aspect of this movie -that the dramatization of a search for the isolation that lots of homosexual adolescents can experience even if they reside in relatively supportive surroundings. As Simon himself admits in voice-over, his friends and parents are warm-hearted liberals who'll take him for who he is, even though they sometimes tell mildly tasteless homosexual jokes which make him wince. However,"Blue," his unidentified pen-pal, provides the type of understanding his direct friends and family can not. It is a sense of relationship that Berlanti contrasts with actual compassion.

Logan Miller's Martin is completely detestable, but that is the purpose. A Garner monologue surprisingly falls somewhat flat. Enjoy, Simon includes its share of exploitation but does not tip the balance too much toward sentimentality. The film succeeds in its aims: provide accessible charactersthat provide a good depiction of the issues confronted by closeted homosexual adolescents that are frightened that revealing their key will ruin their own lives, and supply the second that all rom-com fans demand from names in their favourite genre. It is a well-made, affable movie which should offer an enjoyable 2 hours to get all but the most virulent homophobes.
